Hastings & Pleadwell: A Communication Company (H&P) celebrated its 10-year anniversary over a year's period ending in mid 2007 with 10 acts of service.

"We tell our clients to build community goodwill through service; we’re walking our talk,” says Barbra Pleadwell.

H&P’s good deeds began in May 2006 with sponsorship of Hawai‘i Public Radio: underwriting Town Square with Beth Ann Kozlovich. This good deed has been extended for another year, and H&P has added Morning Café to its underwriting agreement.

For its second act, H&P designed and taught the three-part course “Brand for the Businesswoman” pro bono for the Hawai‘i Women’s Business Center. Barbra Pleadwell is a former board member. Roughly 40 attendees benefited from the course.

A third good deed was a workshop aimed at community service groups on Hawai‘i Island where H&P has an office. The workshop focused on building membership through public relations. More than 30 representatives from nonprofit groups such as the Girl Scouts, Zonta, Arc of Hilo and others attended.

Child & Family Service's Adoption Program benefits from our fourth good deed. H&P provided the program with a toolkit of communication how-tos.

H&P provided scholarships for media training with national experts Norm Hartman and Ellie Shaw to five non-profit leaders, Connie Mitchell of Institute for Human Services, Kendall Hirai of Hawaii Home Ownership Center, Mike Gleason of The Arc of Hilo, Heidi Anderson of Hawaii Heart Gallery and David Louis of Hawaii Heart Gallery.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts' annual fundraiser "Showcase" is the good deed number 6. "Showcase" organizers hired H&P to help with outreach, but the H&P partners are adding 15 hours of pro bono time. The wine and food event raises money for education programs at the museum.

H&P customized a presentation for the Y’s Men (booster club for the YMCAs in Hawai‘i) workshop on membership recruitment and retention "Crossing the generational divide."

Act of service number 8 is providing communication services and development for “Hawaii Vision Project,” a program headed by Retina Institute of Hawaii and its partners to host a mobile van for the islands, reaching the under-served population of Hawaii by offering medical attention and retinal eye disease pre-screening.

Other good deeds included:

Communication support for Food Basket (formally the Food Bank) in Hilo.

Communications consulting for a program to fund a scholarship to Academy of the Pacific for a graduate of the Bobby Benson Center.

"Fostering an environment of community service is simply smart business," says Barbara Hastings.

The good deeds will continue through Summer 2007 for a year of celebration and giving. Programs were developed to support the local business community, women, young people and nonprofits.

H&P partners and staff support numerous non-profits, sit on community boards and volunteer for civic projects.
